Qatar Eyes Historic Bid to Host 2036 Olympic Games

Qatar has officially stepped into the spotlight as a contender to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games, leveraging its world-class infrastructure and experience from recent global sports events as major strengths.

In a statement released on its website, the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) confirmed that it is actively participating in "ongoing dialogue" with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) regarding the selection process for the host city.

The Gulf nation, which successfully hosted the FIFA World Cup in 2022 and the AFC Asian Cup in 2024, joins a competitive list of hopefuls that already includes India, Indonesia, Türkiye, and Chile. Other countries reportedly considering bids include Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Egypt, Hungary, Italy, Germany, Denmark, and Canada.

Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, president of the QOC, highlighted Qatar’s strong position in an interview with state media:

“We already have 95% of the necessary sports venues ready, and we are working toward full readiness with a detailed national development strategy. Our plan is anchored in a long-term vision focused on delivering a socially, economically, and environmentally sustainable legacy.”

Doha, Qatar’s capital city, is already scheduled to host the 2030 Asian Games and previously held the event in 2006, demonstrating a proven track record in managing high-profile international sports tournaments.

If Qatar’s bid is successful, it would mark the first time the Olympic Games are held in the Middle East – a significant milestone in a region increasingly asserting its influence in the world of sports. Notably, Saudi Arabia is also preparing to host the FIFA World Cup in 2034.
