London — Former UK Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, joined by MP Zarah Sultana, has unveiled a new political party aiming to offer a left-wing alternative to the current Labour leadership, especially as public dissatisfaction grows over welfare policies and the UK's stance on the Gaza conflict.
On Thursday, Corbyn and Sultana—both of whom are now sitting as independents after separating from Labour—announced the formation of a fresh political force. While the official name is still pending registration, the project is temporarily listed online as “Your Party”, a title which has already prompted public confusion.
In a passionate joint statement, the duo declared it was time to “build a new kind of political party” that actively challenges the inequality of a “rigged” system. The statement criticized the government’s priorities, saying:
The system is rigged when billions are found for war, but none for the poor.
They envisioned a movement deeply rooted in communities, trade unions, and grassroots social activism, committed to systemic transformation, including mass redistribution of wealth and power. Among its core positions is a strong call for a free and independent Palestine, addressing growing concern over the UK’s alignment with Israel during the ongoing Gaza conflict.
Supporters are invited to join the founding phase, which will culminate in an inaugural conference—a forum where members will decide on the party’s leadership, structure, and policy priorities. No concrete launch date has been confirmed yet.
Labour Leadership Faces Mounting Criticism
The timing of this announcement is notable, as Labour leader Keir Starmer is facing increasing backlash. Though his party ended nearly 20 years of Conservative rule after last year’s July general election, his stance on welfare reform and Middle East policy has fragmented internal party unity.
Recently, Starmer managed to pass a softened version of a controversial welfare bill, aimed at cutting support for families with more than two children. This move prompted rebellion within the party, resulting in the suspension of several Labour MPs, including Sultana.
In foreign policy, Starmer’s hesitation to formally recognise a Palestinian state, and his reluctance to distance the UK from Israeli military actions in Gaza, have alienated many on the left and pro-Palestine activists.
Corbyn and Sultana: Political Backgrounds
Jeremy Corbyn, now 76, led the Labour Party from 2015 to 2020. He stepped down following the party’s defeat to the Conservatives in the 2019 general election. His tenure was heavily marked by ideological battles and intense media scrutiny, especially over allegations of anti-Semitism within the party. Corbyn continues to insist that those allegations were politically exaggerated.
After his suspension from Labour in 2020, Corbyn successfully ran as an independent in last year’s general election, retaining his Islington North seat.
Zarah Sultana, who entered Parliament in 2019, quickly rose as a young voice of Labour’s progressive flank. However, she too was suspended in 2024 after publicly opposing the benefit cap affecting larger families—a core policy Starmer insisted on enforcing.
On Thursday, in a lighthearted post on X (formerly Twitter), Sultana clarified a point of confusion:
It’s not called ‘Your Party!’” she wrote, suggesting a new name is on the horizon.
As public discourse in the UK grows more critical of centrist policies and foreign alignments, this new leftist platform aims to revive socialist values and offer a political home for those feeling abandoned by mainstream parties.
