OpenAI Launches $50M Fund to Support Nonprofits & AI for Public Good

San Francisco, July 18
— In a bold move to stay true to its mission of developing AI that benefits everyone, OpenAI has announced a $50 million fund aimed at supporting nonprofits and community organizations.

The initiative follows recommendations from OpenAI's newly formed Nonprofit Commission, which was created earlier this year to help guide the company's philanthropic direction. The commission interviewed over 500 nonprofits and community leaders to shape the fund's purpose and strategy.

What’s the Fund For?

The fund will:

  • Help nonprofits integrate AI tools into education, healthcare, and economic development

  • Support community-led research and grassroots innovation

  • Foster projects that use AI to solve real-world challenges

OpenAI says this is about making sure every community — not just tech giants — benefits from AI.

A Mission-Driven Structure Shift

OpenAI started as a nonprofit but now operates as a "capped-profit" company — a structure designed to attract investment while staying focused on AI for humanity. To keep that balance, OpenAI plans to turn its for-profit arm into a public benefit corporation, with the nonprofit remaining in control as a shareholder.

Why It Matters

With AI tools like ChatGPT reaching millions, there's growing concern about who benefits. OpenAI’s new fund is meant to ensure equity and access — giving grassroots communities a chance to shape the future of AI, not just be shaped by it.

“We want AI to help solve problems that matter in the real world, not just in boardrooms,” said an OpenAI spokesperson.
